My work is influenced in the main by the local coast where I live. The Gower coast line is always beautiful in my eyes in what ever weather, what ever time of the year.
Yesterday I took my self to Pwlldu. I took my shoes off and had to wet my feet, enjoy the sand between my toes and the cold fresh sea water around my ankles.
When I lived in Bishopston, Pwlldu bay was my walk to beach. Since Lock down, this bay has become increasingly more popular it seems, and this was the busiest that I have ever seen it ie about 20 others plus perhaps yesterday. I stayed long enough for the bay to empty, utter seclusion in this magical place, at one with nature. This is where I get my thrills, my enthusiasm and inspiration to paint. Working from images for me is not enough, I like to create a feel, respond to the power, the soul of the place. Atmosphere, presence, and emotional feeling of a space, a bay.
Im concerned with more than photographic replication of a place, I want you to feel, smell, hear the ocean. As far as possible I want to immerse the on looker of my work into the space where my focus lies.
The rush of the sea wave, the mist that engulfs the bay, the sound of the birds, the gentle and not so gentle, unforgiving crash of the sea pulling and pushing, engulfing the beach, or further out to sea, wave upon wave. As I try to find the words to describe how much this means and affects me, I struggle to put into words sufficiently. My communication is best via visual means, using my hands to create the textured composition and bones of the movements Im conveying. Mind to hand, composition first created by hand with texture, then layered with colour, finally paint almost thrown at my canvas/board. The energy cutting, breaking, invading my painting surface. For me the whole process is immersive, the process is one of total intimacy between my self and my art work as it takes form and gradually breathes on its own - this is when I put my tools and brushes down. I confess that I need to be alone in my creativity. I need to converse with my work fully, to communicate by hand to surface, there is no room for distraction or multi tasking. My only other devise to aid my freedom to create freely, emotionally and completely is music - Ill share this in a post another time, soon..
Thank you for reading. Enjoy the waves
